Why is 'do you take my insurance' not the right question?

What we're really looking for in a provider is the best value. And there are two different components to value - results and cost.

Why is 'do you take my insurance' not the right question?

After all, if we don't get the results we're looking for, it doesn't matter how low the cost is.

Results in this context are about 1) getting better and 2) staying better. With pelvic rehab, we know what quality care looks like:

  • Full hour with the specialist, not shortened appointments, working with an aide or student, or just being watched doing exercises.

  • Internal + external treatment at every appointment, not someone only able to treat one or the other.

  • Hands-on, practical treatment and not doing biofeedback or Kegels.

  • "Finding the why" for lasting relief, not temporary symptom reduction.

Cost is about how much the service charges. We often assume that a place that 'takes my insurance' is less expensive. And sometimes that's true. But if you have a high deductible, you'll be paying out of pocket no matter where you go.

And you might not realize your 'in-network' place is charging hundreds of dollars per session until you get a surprise bill months later.

Our local 'in-network' place, for example, charges nearly $650 for an initial evaluation if you have a deductible.

Where will I get the most value?

When we really understand the results and cost of physical therapy, we can make an informed choice about where we get the most value.

What are the 4 Foundations of Pelvic Health?
